The only question I have for Congressman John Lewis is, “What took you so long?” The McCain campaign was apparently caught off guard by the the race card salvo, while many of us knew this day would officially come.

ARLINGTON, VA — U.S. Senator John McCain today issued the following statement:

“Congressman John Lewis’ comments represent a character attack against Governor Sarah Palin and me that is shocking and beyond the pale. The notion that legitimate criticism of Senator Obama’s record and positions could be compared to Governor George Wallace, his segregationist policies and the violence he provoked is unacceptable and has no place in this campaign. I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I’ve always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track.

“I call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate 24 days before the election. Our country must return to the important debate about the path forward for America .”

Okay, let’s take off the gloves.

While Senator McCain and Governor Palin have to show some public civility, those of us often on the receiving end of liberal racist hate do not.

What set this off? Reports from a biased mainstream media of hate speech directed at Barack Obama. As I know the rules of journalism; something some in the mainstream may learn once they achieve first grade industry status, one should not report stories they can’t back up. So far innuendo has been reported as fact to further a rumor they’ve failed to substantiate.

Where’s the videotape of McCain supporters screaming “Kill him!", referring to Senator Obama? YouTube? Liveleak? I’m waiting to see something, anything backing up the careless and irresponsible reporting by so-called journalists.

Where’s the first hand accounts and quotes with attribution. This is pure rumormongering, exploited by a civil rights era-has been-United States Congressman doing what Democrats do best: squelch speech by any means necessary. The race card has always been their nuclear option, and a lazy, complicit press is their convenient conduit.

It’s ironic that Congressman Lewis cites Alabama Governor George Wallace… a segregationist, racist DEMOCRAT.

Senator McCain and Governor Palin must be striking a nerve.

McCain/Palin supporters are angry. Now, when liberals are angry they can (and will) freely call Republicans things that can’t be printed in most newspapers or repeated on any broadcast medium. That’s what they call “free speech". Liberals (white and black) free free to call black Republicans anything they can come up with, the more blatantly racist the better. McCain and Palin have done NOTHING to stoke any racial animus towards Senator Barack Obama.

However, the standard operating procedure from the left is to shout down any criticism deemed damaging to their Messiah. The issues now being brought up are valid. Despite the conventional wisdom offered by the media elite, the American people are intelligent enough to absorb the still-unresolved issues surrounding Barack Obama. Bringing up these issues is not racist.

Those who play the card (to stop the questions from being asked) are.

If the Congressman wants to remind us of the Democrats racist past; please, be our guest. Next time, he may want to acknowledge the likes of Benjamin Travis Laney (Arkansas Governor); Fielding Wright (Mississippi Governor); Frank M. Dixon (Alabama Governor); William H. Murray (Oklahoma Governor); Mills E. Godwin Jr. (Governor of Virginia); and Orval Faubus (Governor of Arkansas during the Little Rock Nine crisis)—just to name a few. Next time, we’d be glad to list the former Senators if the Congressman decides he wants to play the race card!”

The Republican candidates’ criticism aren’t stoking hate as Lewis says. Obama’s dodging of the facts are prompting the anger as many feel a genuine mystery man could steal the presidency.

Barack Obama has failed to come clean on his simple qualification to be President of the United States (provide a certified birth certificate). A constitutional crisis may be Obama’s fault. Not the result of racism.

Barack Obama has failed to come clean on the extent of his relationship with William Ayers, ACORN, and new revelations are coming out seemingly every day.

Barack Obama has failed to release his medical records, and we know how much hell would be raised if John McCain did the same. Granted, Bill Clinton declined to do the same, but that doesn’t mean precident should be one-sided. Obama, like most liberals, is supposed to be smarter than the “ordinary” American, yet he won’t release his college transcripts.

Barack Obama’s activities with the Kenyan elections and Christian prosecution aftermath has been blown off by the media, probably because black people dying isn’t considered news unless given awareness as some ditzy Hollywood celebrity’s pet project.

The fact that Senator McCain and Governor Palin is doing a lazy, partisan media’s job at informing the public about the one the world’s been waiting for. If Obama would come clean, these issues could go away. Bringing up these issues is politics, not racism.

Democrat demagogues get away with this tactic because Democrats have hidden their racist past and sold Socialism to blacks, a system that sounds good but has proven to be devastating to black communities.”

Instead of McCain having to answer Congressman Lewis’ third rail allegations, a responsible media (no pun intended) would be asking Lewis to cite specifics. Ask the congressman when he heard these murderous shouts during McCain/Palin rallies. Ask the congressman to be specific on what racially incendiary statements either McCain or Palin made equivalent to the actions of Democrat George Wallace.

Congressman Lewis can throw out baseless race accusations and the media can report them as fact. Both are lazy, increasingly irrelevant, and they both know it.

As many of you know, I’m the Republican candidate for State Representative in the Second Franklin District of Massachusetts. My campaign is dedicated to real reform: making our district financially independent, exposing government waste, and making arrogant politicians accountable to the citizens they’re supposed to represent.

However, most citizens have no idea how much of their tax money goes to domestic violence programs, how ineffective they are, or how much harm they cause to families, especially already government-weakened black families. Let me explain.

First, the money: Each year the federal government spends over $1 billon dollars for various programs designed to stop domestic violence. That money goes to law enforcement departments, prosecutors, and abuse shelters. Then add the money from state and local government, as well as private contributions, and we’re looking at a $4 billion industry.

If that $4 billion was actually stopping domestic violence, I think we’d all agree it was money well spent.

But the truth is that domestic violence programs have not worked. This is what industry insiders are saying:

· “We have no evidence to date that VAWA has led to a decrease in the overall levels of violence against women,” according to Angela Moore Parmley, PhD at the U.S. Department of Justice.

· “At worst, the criminal justice system increases violence against women. At best, it has little or no effect,” notes Linda Mills, PhD, New York University vice provost and author of Violent Partners

A cynic might say, “Another ineffective government program – so what else is new?” The problem with domestic violence programs in Massachusetts is that they are actually harmful. Here’s why….

State laws have long made it easy for persons to get a restraining order. These orders essentially order a partner out of the house for a few days for a cooling-off period. Problem, restraining orders are too easy to obtain.

One study by the Massachusetts Trial Court reviewed the domestic restraining orders issued in the Commonwealth. The study found that less than half of the orders involved even an allegation of violence. In other words, the order was issued solely on the basis of alleged fear or emotional distress, not because of actual or imminent violence.

The problem is compounded when a restraining order is then used in a divorce hearing to “prove” one’s spouse is abusive, effectively removing that person’s parental rights.

Elaine Epstein, former president of the Massachusetts Bar Association, spoke candidly about the problem: “Everyone knows that restraining orders and orders to vacate are granted to virtually all who apply… In many cases, allegations of abuse are now used for tactical advantage.”

Once the “temporary” order is in place, it can be a nightmare to remove.

The following is a court transcript from a Bay State hearing in which the respondent’s attorney requested the court to vacate (i.e., discontinue) the order:

Mr. Hession: “Can you please state your name and your address for the record?” [The Court argues with counsel as to whether Mr. L can testify.]

The Court: “I don’t believe I need to hear any evidence from your client. I’m going to deny your request to vacate the restraining order.”

Let me repeat the judge’s words: “I don’t believe I need to hear any evidence from your client.” Imagine being on the receiving end of that.

Somehow we’ve lost sight of fundamental concepts of due process and innocent until proven guilty.

Much of the problem can be traced to the Commonwealth’s legal definition of “abuse,” which includes “placing another in fear of imminent serious physical harm.” Now, almost anything counts as partner “violence” – raising your voice, an honest airing of differences, and even “possessiveness” all invite legal intervention.

As a result, scarce resources end up going to cases that are minor and/or frivolous. As a result, real victims of violence can’t get the help they desperately need.

In short, we have created an abuse-reduction system that is ineffective, unaccountable, and even harmful. These problems are documented in a series of reports by RADAR—Respecting Accuracy in Domestic Abuse Reporting: http://www.mediaradar.org/radar_special_reports.php

So how do we go about fixing a costly system that has gone astray? An effective approach to curbing domestic violence needs to incorporate policies that:

1. Respect fundamental Constitutional guarantees of due process and equal treatment under the law.
2. Are based on the best available research and are able to withstand scientific scrutiny.
3. Assure that interventions are based on an individualized assessment, respect victims’ wishes, acknowledge cultural differences, and do not impose a one-size-fits-all approach.
4. Emphasize counseling and treatment for minor/one-time cases, rather than law enforcement and criminal justice intervention.
5. Discourage the making of false accusations.
6. Do not engage in discrimination.
7. Assure accountability at all levels.

Now most of you who’ve read my columns know how little sympathy I have for those who make false accusations. Many people have been unjustly incarcerated, while the person who may recant can do so without so much as saying “sorry” while lives are ruined and reputations are destroyed.

Stopping false allegations and helping real victims while using taxpayer money more wisely is an agenda that everyone can support.

This will not sit well with many.

Here’s a rundown of my night at convention:

2:55 p.m. — After a long walk, I reach the huge white tents where we have to go through the scanning and search routine. There are dumpsters filling up with stuff people can’t take into the stadium. I notice umbrellas and even American flags thrown in the trash cans. (Ironically, everyone inside was handed an American flag.)
