Do Female Politicians Represent an ‘Ethical and Pure’ Force?

Permalink 07:49:54 pm, Categories: General

By Carey Roberts

Hillary Clinton has famously claimed that “Research shows the presence of women raises the standards of ethical behavior and lowers corruption.” Ironically it’s Mrs. Clinton who has now come under withering criticism as her ethical lapses and make-believe claims become legion.

Hillary still hasn’t come clean on where her $5 million campaign loan came from. She refused to release her Senate earmark requests, even after Barack Obama made known his list.

Most comical of all, she claimed that she and daughter Chelsea had to duck sniper fire during a 1996 trip to Bosnia. “We were basically told to run to our cars,” Clinton told her audience.

Oh well, it made for a good sound-bite.

Betsey Wright, confidante to Hillary Clinton, once bragged that women represent an “ethical and pure force” in politics. And Hillary recently stated a female president would represent a “sea change in our country.”

It’s not just the Lefties who are saying it’s time for a housecleaning of politics as usual. And Jo-Ann Davidson, co-chair of the Republican National Committee, has argued that “We have better public policy when more women are at the table.”

There’s no doubt that women bring a valuable perspective to the political arena. But do female politicians really exemplify an ethical uber-species?

One cannot do justice in a single column to the repeated misrepresentations that have marked Mrs. Clinton’s career. A “trouble with truth-telling, I would think, is the constant aspect of her time in public life that is most troubling,” reveals biographer Carl Bernstein.

Just consider the unending string of ethical lapses: her conflict of interest dealings at the Rose Law Firm, the cattle futures scam, White House travel-gate, her concealment of $120,000 in free ghost-writing services for It Takes a Village, Hillary’s venomous attacks on Bill Clinton’s sexual paramours – the list goes on.

And when Obama aide Samantha Power called Hillary Clinton a “monster,” I couldn’t help but think of Hillary’s physical and verbal abuse of husband Bill and others: www.intellectualconservative.com/2007/04/09/does-hillary-clinton-pass-the-kitchen-test/

OK, maybe Hillary isn’t the most squeaky-clean politician in Washington, but what about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi? Fourteen months after anointing herself “the most powerful woman in America,” where’s the sea-change in the House of Representatives?

You will recall Pelosi promised to institute “the most ethical Congress in history.” Then she turned around and named Rep. William Jefferson, caught with $90,000 funny-money in the fridge, to the Homeland Security Committee.

What about her pledge to end wasteful earmarks? No, not by a long shot.

And creating a culture of inclusive consensus-building? Not according to Senator Harry Reid, who revealed Pelosi “runs that place with an iron hand

verdict on the first female Speaker of the House? “Pelosi has emerged as a fairly conventional leader,” the nonpartisan Politico newspaper recently concluded.

Look beyond the gender posturing and muscle-flexing and you’ll detect the unmistakable scent of sexism.

Hillary often displays a wicked sense of humor delivered at the expense of members of the opposite sex. Once Mrs. Clinton recounted a sympathy note she received during one of the White House scandals that read, “Whenever you have trouble coping, just think of Snow White. She had to live with seven men.”

Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee has openly called for male politicians to “step aside” while women move in to call the shots. Last Fall Texas Republican Kay Granger asserted, “It’s important for men and women to understand that we [women] will decide this election” – a remark that sounds more like a threat than a prediction.

A February 5 editorial in the Christian Science Monitor announced grandly that “a woman leader governs differently than a man, bringing new perspectives and helping other women.” That’s a rather bizarre claim in light of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, multi-billion dollar programs that were enacted by men and designed to benefit mostly women.

But for a glimpse into the dark world of feminist gyno-politics, read Gloria Steinem’s New York Times pity-party piece, “Women are Never Front-Runners.” [www.nytimes.com/2008/01/08/opinion/08steinem.html]

Being the expert of Freudian psychology that she is, Steinem derides men because they “tend to feel they are regressing to childhood when dealing with a powerful woman.” Playing the victim for all its worth, Steinem concludes that “Gender is probably the most restricting force in American life.”

So as Hillary Clinton tells voters to forgive and forget her Bosnia folktale and as Nancy Pelosi’s autocratic regimen reigns, we should recall that despite whatever other virtues they may possess, female politicos are cut from the same frayed ethical cloth as the rest of us mere mortals.

Now have we ever been misled by Senator Obaama?

Ever wonder why the “progressive” (as he repeatedly describes himself) Obama dances for Wall Street on the (fake) Social Security “crisis” (Krugman 2007a) and sounds like Mitt Romney and Rudy Guliani in decrying the specter of “government mandated” universal health care (Krugman 2007b)? Curious about why the avowed environmentalist thinks that nuclear power should be considered part of the solution to America’s energy crisis and has recently joined Hillary in voting for the extension of the corporate-neoliberal North American Free Trade Agreement to Peru?

Follow the money. Obama’s presidential campaign has received nearly $5 million dollars from securities and investment firms and $866,000 from commercial banks through October of 2007. Obama’s top contributor so far is Goldman Sachs (provider of $369,078 to Obama), identified by Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) investigators as “a major proponent of privatizing Social Security as well as legislation that would essentially deregulate the investment banking/securities industry.” Eight of Obama’s top twenty election investors are securities and investment firms: Goldman Sachs, Lehman Bros. (number 2 at $229,090), J.P. Morgan Chase and Co. (# 4 at $216,759), Citadel Investment Group (#7 at 4166,608), UBS AG ($146,150), UBS-America ($106,680), Morgan Stanley ($104,421), and Credit Suisse Group ($92,300). The last two firms are also known to be leading privatization advocates (Center for Responsive Politics 2007a)

Senator Obama has made the following statement," I don't take money from oil and gas companies and I don't take money from lobbyists." From the Center for Responsive Politics he accepted $160,000.00 from major oil companies, Exxon, Shell, Chevron, BP and others.

Two of his top bundlers George Kaiser and Robert Cavnar are CEO's for major oil companies. Last month, Obama accepted another $8400.00 from ExxonMobile, $12,370.00 from Chevron and $6500.00 from British Petroleum..

These are the same major oil companies testifying on Capitol Hill today

These are the funds and contributors for 2008 Finance/Insurance $15,087,469.00, Communications $7,035,249 Securities, $6,715,680.00 , Education $5,069,186.00 Misc. Business $10,261,541.00 there is a little more than $8,024,382.00 undisclosed.

Exxelon a lobbying group, for Nuclear Power Industry contributed $227,000.00 far exceeding any support for any other presidential candidate. David Axelrod, Chief Strategist has helped Edison Commonwealth, a subsidiary of Exxelon
with its communications strategy since 20002.

This isn't even taking into account his friends; William Ayers, the domestic terrorists, friend, neighbor and board member with him on the Woodlawn Preservation & Investment Corp.
.
Anthony Rezko on trial for kickbacks,a real fixer, friend since 1990 although Obama, initially lied and said he only did about 5 hours of work for him and a church on a real estate deal; he also was a major bundler for Obama’s campaigns raising $14mil in 2003 according to the Federal Election Committee.

Nadhim Auchi, Iraqi billionaire; Friend of Saddam Hussein; and Tony Rezko; loaning him $3.5 mil. For the purchase of the house and lot in question; the determining factor for his arrest. He was convicted of corruption charges in France and received a suspended sentence and was living in London. Although Obama says he doesn’t remember ever meeting with
Auchi they met briefly at the Seasons Hotel according to the London Times.

Ali Abunimah a Chicago based activist for Electronic Intifada a Pro-Palestinian online publication, who introduced Obama and and his wife Michelle at an Islamic fundraiser at the home of Rashid Khalidi an executive of AAAN.

Finally, his Pastor and mentor almost like an Uncle, Rev. Wright who disrespected and degraded our country along with being an anti.-semite and a hate monger. Our U.S.Senator did not even say anything to this man of God?

This is from our candidate for change. He has honesty and integrity; the one that will always be truthful. Right!!!

Jack Smith from another blog wrote the following and is so true:

YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than
Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of
collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the
greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care
can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current
health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against
overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two
wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war
only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission
in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE
AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than
Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest
amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than
Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education
affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting
salary's than they had ever been before or since.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton
who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on
record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches
from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two
master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries,
and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic
candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

Unfortunately, female politicians have to cope with a corrupt system that men made. I won't claim that women are completely ethical or at all "pure" (whatever that means), but all people in politics need to make practical concessions in order to achieve crucial goals. None of the women you have named here have done any harm of the magnitude of George Bush and his buddies.

As for Hillary Clinton--whom I support passionately--she is by far the most qualified candidate in the field; she has the most detailed programs to undo the damage the Bush administration has done over the last seven years; and she has been scrutinized more critically than any other politician. If she were the monster you claim, Ken Starr would have found something to charge her with.

As for the Bosnia matter, read the account in the April 1 New York times by LISSA MUSCATINE and MELANNE VERVEER, eyewitnesses to the event. Although they differ in details, they confirm the essential truth of Hillary's account--it was dangerous out there! There is an order of magnitude difference between screwing up the details and falsifying the existence of WMDs in Iraq, as the Bush Administration did!

I like many Democrats in this country am quite fed up with this kind of drivel. Hillary bashing has become the game of the day. It is vastly unfair to voters like myself for you to publish all of this negativity, evidently trying to fuel a huge fire in hopes that it will burn your "witch" at the stake. The facts are that we have 2 excellent candidates to choose from. If you like Obama, then use your print to address the issues and why you like him. If it is McCain, then rave on but don't try to hand off your brand of "hatin" to intelligent voters like myself. You are not trying to persuade voters to make an informed choice, more likely you are trying to get Obama and /or McCain to fight your war with strong women for you. This is an election, not a hockey game. Writers like you eventually would turn our election process into a "bloodsport" if you could. May the ghosts of Soujourner Truth, Abigale Adams and Susan B Anthony haunt you in your sleep tonite.

Straight talk on Tuzla (New York Times, April 1, 2008)
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/01/opinion/01muscatine.html?_r=2&ref=opinion&oref=login&oref=slogin

By LISSA MUSCATINE and MELANNE VERVEER
Published: April 1, 2008, Washington

AS staff members who traveled with the first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, to Bosnia in March 1996, we have followed with more than passing interest the extensive news coverage of her landing in Tuzla. Video footage clearly shows that Mrs. Clinton’s assertions that she landed “under fire” and that the arrival ceremony was canceled were wrong. She said so herself last week.

Yet even since she acknowledged her mistake, the commentary has continued unabated. Reports are now being embellished (to borrow the term du jour) to suggest that Bosnia was not really a danger zone. Her visiting American troops on a peacekeeping mission in a hostile environment is now being treated as if it were a trip to the beach. During a week of nonstop coverage, few journalists went beyond the irresistible video footage to ask what else happened on this trip and how Mrs. Clinton might have erred in the details about the landing in Tuzla. So here are some facts that provide context:

We flew in a C-17 cargo plane from Germany to Bosnia precisely because it was capable of steep descents and ascents into and out of areas of conflict. We were issued flak jackets on the plane before landing in Tuzla and were told the tarmac ceremony might be canceled or curtailed due to sniper fire from the surrounding hillsides. The first lady and Chelsea Clinton were moved to the armored **** for the landing. Armored vehicles were placed around the tarmac, and Apache helicopters hovered overhead.

In a recent e-mail message to a British blogger, Ejup Ganic, who was the acting president of Bosnia during Mrs. Clinton’s visit, wrote: “I remember that visit quite well. Although the NATO troops were in Tuzla, we still believed that some positions on the hills were occupied by radical Serbs, so I was worried about the overall safety.” The planned welcoming ceremony was shortened, he said, but it still lasted a bit longer than expected because a nongovernment group brought along a little girl to sing to the first lady.

Later, Mrs. Clinton flew from Tuzla to two military outposts by helicopter, escorted by Apache gunships.

As has been reported, Mrs. Clinton’s trip to Bosnia included a U.S.O. component with the comedian Sinbad and the singer Sheryl Crow. The helicopters that carried them to performances at American base camps zigzagged just above the trees to avoid potential ground fire, according to Carey Cavanaugh, who was then a State Department official traveling with Sinbad, and helicopters flew alongside to deal with the threat of anti-aircraft fire or snipers. These facts explain why many of us, including the first lady, believed that the conditions on the ground were precarious. We were worried about sniper fire and were prepared to rush off the tarmac when we landed.

In their single-minded focus on the landing in Tuzla, reporters and commentators have omitted any discussion of what Mrs. Clinton accomplished on her trip. In addition to showing support for our troops and for the peace accords in Bosnia, Mrs. Clinton met with Bosnian religious leaders, women and community activists and, when she returned to Washington, was able to give administration officials her firsthand assessment of the nascent reconstruction effort.

After leaving Bosnia, she met with leaders of Turkey and Greece and in those countries promoted efforts on behalf of international development and democracy. In Istanbul, five years before 9/11, Mrs. Clinton presciently convened representatives of some of the world’s major religions to advance a dialogue about religious reconciliation and ways to counter religious extremism.

The video of her arrival on the tarmac in Bosnia may be great theater and easy fodder for commentators, but it shouldn’t be allowed to obscure what else was happening on this important trip when the cameras weren’t rolling.
==================================

You brought up Bosnia.. and so, I gave you the full story on it. You can read about the real experience and ACTUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN BOSNIA TRIP, NONE OF WHICH WAS TRUMPED UP ANY!! The fact is, she WAS told to hurry up and it was an UNUSUALLY (for First Lady) rapid exit and departure; and there were no dignatories; the kid who came and wanted to sing was unexpected, etc. The video segment we saw was quite brief. The fact that we are DISPUTING HERE is DOES SHE HAVE SUBSTANTIAL INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE. AND SHE ABSOLUTELY DOES!!!!

In fact, why just Bosnia, let us expand on her international experience well beyond Bosnia. Let us compare and contrast the international relations work that Hillary and Barack have gained over the years.

Hillary has solid experience in international relations. She has been to 70-80 countries. Many of them had diplomatic relations. Her work in Rwanda, China and Northern Ireland as well as in Bosnia are worth major credit.

Following news media articles are only a few that document the fact that Hillary does have Foreign Policy experience to be our next President.
Hillary did significant international work in: Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia, China, Rwanda. See clip below:

N. Ireland & Kosovo: http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/3/10/235744/616
Hillary Met with Macedonian President and Prime Minister offering Economic Development Package. (Chicago Tribune, 5/16/99)

First Lady Brings Publicity, Aid to Macedonia. Hillary Clinton met with Prime Minister and and Parlimentary President. (Washington Post, 5/15/99)

Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlami, "Hillary is one of the essential reasons Ireland had peace. Without her we would have no economic boom." (Talk Magazine, 8/1999)

Hillary met with Irish leaders who wanted to 'pay their respects' for her work on behalf of peace in Northern Ireland. (Associated Press, 12/7/2007)
No wonder they endorse her so heartily. Here is a good summary of the extracts from varioius souces and a video clip:
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/feature/irishamericans/
China speech at a global forum.
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/hillaryclintonbeijingspeech.htm
Hillary has Real international experience affecting and bringing change == Hillary has Credibility, Connections, RESPECT in the International arena.
===================================

And, of course, this is all in stark contrast to Obama who HAS NOT STEPPED INTO EUROPE YET.. and the only countries he has travelled to in public office are in Africa and possibly once to Middle East (unclear).
===================================

Yes, to understand Hillary, you have to hear it from 40 people who speak to her depth and credibility, in their own words: www.thehillaryiknow.com

It is remarkable that we have an opportunity to select a president who has given such consistent messages on uniqueness of all human beings. She has said repeatedly that we are ALL UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS ASPIRING TO OUR HIGHEST POTENTIAL.

Check these:
Wellesley College speech (1969) http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Commencement/1969/053169hillary.html
Hillary's Women's Rights speech. The one she gave in Beijing http://www.famousquotes.me.uk/speeches/Hillary-Clinton/
Commencement Address at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville - May 11, 1996 http://clinton4.nara.gov/WH/EOP/First_Lady/html/generalspeeches/1996/5-11-96.html

She did not wait to get into a hot spot and try to obfuscate the real issue with glossing over it with a self-serving message of "unity."

At the same time, EVEN WHEN IT WAS SUCH A SMALL SUPERFICIAL ITEM, the lady was strong and confident enough to say, yes, that was not accurate and I was jetlagged. Hats off to the lady.

No wonder the veterans endorse her.
http://flags4hill.com

I am absolutely certain that HILLARY has great moral core and strength.

And yes, she also happens to be a woman.

But you are so surprised about even the slightest slip.. and that should tell you something. How about you go try to check out the lies of Barack Obama?
I have a choice list somewhere here:

If you don't believe Senator Clinton...then believe you own eyes and ears. Time and time againg MALE politicians have been caught with their pants down and their hands in the cookie jar. It has become a daily ritual to open up the newspaper and once again hear about some MALE politician in trouble..whether they be Republican or Democrat. How often have we seen a female in the same situation.....NEVER!

In regards to the Clinton/Bosnia incident....I find it very revealing that the Media continues to hammer this into the news, however, Obama has LIED on many occasions on public television and yet it has not received the same attention. The Bosnia incident is 12 years old...all of Mr. Obamas LIES are recent. Why the double standard?

He LIED about Rev. Wright
He LIED about Rezko
He LIED about Kennedy ties to his father
He LIED about his parents
He LIED about where he stands on Nuclear Energy
He LIED about where he truly stands on Abortion
He LIED about being instrumental in passing certain Legislative Bills....which Senator Dodd himself said was not true.
He has LIED on various occassions and misrepresented both Clintons.
He LIED at the Texas Debate stating that the earmarks had already been released when questioned by one of the moderators......they were released several weeks after that statement.
He LIED and misrepresented his stand on the Cheney energy bill

Do I need to go on? Because there are many more Obama lies. My question is when are you going to cover those Lies and hold him just as accountable as you do Senator Clinton?

Why the seemingly endless write-ups about the same subjects dissecting Sen Clinton?
All those things that were mentioned in this article were all covered by K. Starr and his legal group for several years but they came up with nothing. But the media remains focused on Sen Clinton because I think she is just an easy target. In all fairness, Sen Obama should have the same level of scrutiny. The American people need to know who this man is that is running for the highest office. Do we read articles unfavorable of him? NO. People tend to believe that Sen Obama is being given a free pass because nobody wants to touch him for fear of being called a racist. If this is not the case, then people need to know more about him esp his activities as a law student, a comm organizer, his dealings as a state senator, the million march activities, building his base at the church that shared his racial views, and "bundling" contributors to his campaign, etc. The media should take responsibilty of informing the general public before it is too late.

Hillary Clinton wore that flak jacket in Bosnia and smiled and strolled in front of the cameras in spite of the danger so you could call her a liar and a crook in a free American press sitting in your safe little office.

To answer your question - No. Why? Because no one is pure. However, if you want to pose a question of leadership capabilitites, why not ask: Who is the best candidate to lead the United States of America?

My answer is an unequivacol vote of confidence in Mrs. Hillary Rodham-Clinton!

As a single parent raising a young daughter, I have spent time, money and effort to support her campaign for US President. It is unfortunate that the purpiorted news media has not been fair in presenting her qualifications. The need to polarize the democratic primary along the lines of gender and race is tabloid type journalism. Why not take a critical approach to both democratic candidates and their leadership style? Why not pose the question as if a board member of a major corporation? This is the position I am taking.

I pay taxes, but I don't have the option of sending my child to public schools. Teachers have one of the lowest salaries, yet provide an invaluable services to our society - educating a child!!!

I pay taxes, but I don't feel safe travelling out of the country and visiting American tourist sites. I refuse to continue the debate on this issue. Needlessly to say, the Iraq war, Afganistan, BinLaden, non-compete billion dollar contractors.

I pay taxes, but as a woman, I earn around 70 cents for performing the same job as a man.

What better democratic candidate for the position than someone that was born and raised in America, has stellar educational credentials, has a political career that spans 30 years, has maintained a family that has endured public criticism and scorn, and has relationships with numerous foreign leaders and dignitaries?

As a taxpayer, registered Democrat, single mother, African-American, Adjunct Professor, Visionary leader, I am unabashedly, unequivacally voting for the Mrs.

Inspite of the dangers she had already been advised of, she walked off the cockpit hold, into the tarmac - no red carpet, no immediate surrounding peope (no time for them to come close enough in the rush to get them off) and with pleasant smile, bending to the UNEXPECTED little girl..

HATS OFF LADY!!!

This is from Senator Clinton's website:

Hillary has been one of America's foremost advocates for children and families; an attorney twice voted one of the most influential in America; a First Lady of Arkansas who helped transform the schools; a First Lady for America who helped transform that role, becoming a champion for health care and families at home and a champion of women's rights and human rights around the world.

Since her path-breaking election to the United States Senate, Hillary has been a steadfast advocate for middle-class families, working to help create jobs, expand children's health care and protect Social Security from privatization. As the Senator representing New York after 9/11, Hillary has fought to strengthen our approach to homeland security and to improve our communications and intelligence operations. As the first New Yorker ever named to the Senate Armed Services Committee, Hillary has been a tough critic of the administration's bungling of Iraq and a fierce advocate for proper equipment, health benefits, and treatment for military families.

I, too, am fed up with the continual bashing of Senator Clinton because she is a woman. As a woman, I know that it is ten times harder than a man to even get a job, that pays lower wages due to my sex, and when I was younger, I was questioned about my future "family" plans. None of us are perfect, certainly not the "Saint Obama." So, if you want to talk about issues, then great, let's talk. If you want to talk about experience, I will gladly match Senator Clinton's experience against Senator Obama's. But if you just want to bash politicians and show your true bias towards Senator Clinton, then you do not belong in the 4th estate. Get out.

It's amazing what you can dig up when you really try. It's not too hard to dish dirt when a person has had a long record. A woman that worked tirelessly for all races and genders seems to a track the negative coverage while the golden boy seems to go untouched. The attacks seem to be unending and gender bias. Could it be because they are afraid to go after a man of color? Isn't that the real race issue? What about Senator Obama? He sold his white grandmother down the river for votes. He chose to not only stay but place his children in an anti American environment This is their spiritual leader? Why is it we had more media coverage on a picture of a hand shake than about the lie Senator Obama told when first trying to explain away Reverend Wright? He was never present when this went on? Senator Obama had a CHOICE and he CHOSE to stay in that church. He was not forced, no one tied him to that pew. This is who he and his wife look to for spiritual guidance. Wow, if this were Senator Clinton the media would never let this die. It would be front and center on every headline of every paper up and until the swearing in of John McCain. If it's time to step up and lay the race issue on the line (only when we need a diversion from the real issue of judgment) then shouldn't it be time for the bigger issue to be layed on the line? Think of the vulture like frenzee journalists would have if Senator Clinton even suggested a gender bias is being played out in the media. Well, she doesn't have to, you're doing it for her. You are loud and clear. When a junior Senator has a list in his short run for the presidency that Senator Obama has of misleading and twisting statements then it's time to take him to task. One speech alone led to misleading statements and proof that he out and out intentionally lied. It was him on tape letting reporters know he would be happy to back a recount in Michigan and Florida. Where is he now? How tirelessly did he work on that? Does he even care that thousands of Americans will not have a say in this election? How many more lies before the media stops turning their heads and start holding this "junior" Senator accountable? It's time journalists get responsible and do equal reporting.

Bosnia was not a folk tale. You should be ashamed. Two staffers who were there wrote an oped in the NY Times about it. Do you read? Lisa Muscatine and Melannie Verveer wrote a piece that was published on April first, this year. Their version of what happened behind the scenes on that trip will explain Mrs. Clinton's remarks. The press only had the option to show what happened after they landed, not during the trip or the evasive flight through sniper infested countryside.

Hillary has been castigated for many things. While she has made some mistakes, at least she has a track record of hard work and results. Where is that record for her Opponent? His resume is so thin that you can see daylight through it.

I am voting for Hillary.

As a man I agree that generally when women are present in a powerful role there does tend to be more attention to those things that are healthy, especially when it is someone like Hillary. But lets get down to the real issues. Hillary is right on health care, right on the economy and trade, right on the environment and energy, and best able to be commander and chief. She doesn't have questionable religious ties like Obama and McCain and she like her colleagues in the Senate including major endorsers of Obama voted for a war authorization bill only to see the whole process circumvented by Bush. Not enough is said about Obama's statements in 04 supporting Bushes war policies as revealed by Tim Russert. Obama never had to vote on anything and at the same time made a speech against the war and later gave lips service for the war while going on to vote for every spending measure to fund the war . Obama has gotten a pass on the most critical issues of this campaign while some people still talk about witch hunts that never went anywhere and have nothing to do with the 500 pound gorilla in the room known as Obama's lack of credibility.

I must start by saying that I have to hand it to the author of this lovely article. His name is Carey Roberts, and what you might and/or might not know about Mr. Roberts is that this is just one of his anti-Hillary articles, in a very long line of anti-feminism. I have only recently started reading his criticisms of Sen. Clinton, but when I read how badly he thinks of Sen. Clinton's "ethical lapses" as he so poetically put it, I wondered what kind of other things has he written in the past, who does he write for on a regular basis, etc. Well, my friends, here are a few more articles by Carey Roberts (notice the title of the first one and you'll understand where this is going):

Is Feminism a Mental Disorder?
http://www.ifeminists.net/introduction/editorials/2006/0607roberts.html

Intellectual Perversion of the VAWA Mafia
http://www.newsbull.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59593

More ERA Malarkey
http://capitolhillcoffeehouse.com/more.php?id=A2821_0_1_0_M

And these are only a few. It seems, at least to me that Mr. Roberts has developed a strong pattern for discrediting women in almost every form. He's got something to say about feminism, it seems. Something negative, of course. He tries to contemplate the question "Is Feminism A Mental Disorder?"...

Truthfully, I'm a 24 year old, white male living in NYC and that statement is offensive to me. Absolutely 100% offensive to women, to equal rights activists of the past and present, to the very fabric that is our Freedom. To try to diminish female empowerment to being a mental disorder is the reason why I know Hillary Clinton is needed in this country, in this moment, in this Presidency. Mr. Roberts can say and write whatever he wants and I'm sure his right-winged conservative Republican views are very near and dear to him. I just wonder if he realizes that as he throws stones at Hillary for so-called "trouble with truth-telling", maybe he'll realize that just because you think a certain way, and feel like you're justified in your beliefs, and everyone should be entitled to their personal opinions, but realize hate and prejudice for women is your recurring theme that you write about, and more and more people are noticing it.

Not cool, Carey, not cool...

"...female politicos are cut from the same frayed ethical cloth as the rest of us mere mortals."

I don't believe Hillary ever claimed to be diety-like. I do believe she claimed that having women in an environment strengthens the morays of such environment, and that is not a Hillary Clinton issue, that is a USA Circa 1699 issue, where the virgin-or-whore social moray was laid upon women, thus creating a rather strange but still persistent "mother" image thrust upon women in areas of power. Men don't have this odd double standard -- they are not "father" in a workplace or political venue. So though you may have your opinions on Hillary Clinton, unfortunately, with the manner in which you varied off of your own point and topic, I'm afraid the tying together of Hillary Clinton Vs. Socio-sexist post-Quaker modeling adopted by the USA is --well, simply an unrelated and poor argument. Women in a workplace do add to a sense of accountability in the workplace, period. That's a national statistic that has nothing to do with Hillary. If you are unhappy with that, I suggest you invent a time machine and endeavor to head back to Quaker-established colonies, and re-program the demonizing of women's sexality to the point of creating characters out of them, such as goddesses or whores out of humans with two X chromosomes. Eradicating that moray then would get rid of your issue now. However, your Hillary rant is just that -- a rant based on your discontent for a candidate, which hey -- you're allowed an opinion.

Ah, and Carey -- It's the rest of *we* mere mortals. (Sort of tales the rumbles out of the thunder there at the end...;)

What cheap journalism: You failed to mention that of the list of alleged "ethical lapses" including, dealings at the Rose Law Firm, the cattle futures scam, White House travel-gate," etc., NONE ever ended a court of law! Not even grand jury! These were just stirred up and concocted as "illegal" by Bill Clinton's political foes... Cheap shots like yours have been fired at Mrs. Clinton for over 12 years now. But because they aren't substantive, unlike her legislation effort for children, minorities, and others whose voices are drowned out in Washington, she continues to rise and fight for America. Cut the C*** and stop running afraid from Hillary. She's a patriot who would even fight for your rights in the free press -- although she would stand toe-to-toe with you to tell you you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

I know that women are not perfect; I also know that when a woman makes a moral mistake it is often talked about in the press twice as long as if a man makes the same mistake. This is not my opinion, this is a fact...just watch the news and you will find I am correct.

If the most one can accuse a woman of is being as corrupt as a man, I fail to see how this really helps your male candidate for president or for anything else.

Go to Factcheck.org and see for yourself how Obama has been caught in lie after lie - and has never set the record straight. And that doesn't include all the exaggerations & misrepresentations about his own past (saying his parents fell in love as they shared Selma, when he was born 4 years before Selma; saying JFK had something to do with his father coming to the US, when he didn't, etc.) The conclusory allegations about Hillary are just that - name-calling without foundation.

Please feed me more about why I shouldn't use MY voice and vote to decide who I think should be the next President of the United States. Lord knows, I, like every other American, cannot think for myself and love the fear tactics that are thrust upon me by the media and politicians in the hopes that I vote for their messiah to save me from myself.

When Hillary Clinton started to campaign seriously the media and the Democratic Party were not behind her.
The media played up Obama: a candidate with no experience, no coherent policy, and no scruples – because he initially played to the liberal strategy of slavery guilt. (The whole world was slaves from time to time; how long are their ridiculous perspective going to be allowed to occupy the consciousness and perspective of some people?) He then proceded to copy what the other candidates said. The Democratic Party gradually withdrew their support because they saw, in Obama, a candidate they could run. Moreover, he doesn’t even have a comprehensive health care policy, or a worked out strategy for getting out of Iraq. He is a racist because he sat for years listening to his preacher condemn America, and the other races and did not walk out and join another church.

The early primary debacle worked against her. Obama won the states the would definitely go Republican. Hillary won were the states would vote for a democratic candidate. The caucus worked against her because caucus only gave credence to a selected few. The super delegates that all of the media is so concerned with manipulating are an illegitimate bunch contrived by Howard Dean and cohorts.

First of all, we should have primaries that do not run on and on forever. We should have primaries and not caucuses that only represent the views of a few. They should be scheduled over three consecutive days, and they should include all constituents, there should be NO crossover votes allowed in the primaries. And we do not need super delegates to choose for the American people.

Senators Kennedy, Kerry and others came out for their candidate before the issues were even discussed. They lost in their respective states – and they should have been muzzled before the created havoc. Senators should be responsible and not come out for anyone until the primaries are over.

Once again, the American people are being deprived of their vote because of the manipulation of the few.

Hillary has been more severly criticized, more severly scrutinized than Obama has been. She had been blamed for everything bad that happens. Even if Obama gets the nomination and loses the presidency, Hillary will be blamed for that as well. Why? Because unfortunatel in our society an intelligent, ambitious, fiesty (aggressive) woman is still a threat to both men and women.

Dear Editor,
I am a just-retired Georgia school teacher who is a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton. I taught school in Athens, GA which is home to the University of Georgia. The University is the largest employer in Athens. The poultry industry is the largest non governmental employer. As a result of this we have a high minority and high poverty enrollment in our public schools. During the 90’s I read Hillary Clinton’s book, IT TAKES A VILLAGE. It was and is probably the most important book for people who are interested in helping solve the poverty problem in the United States. It outlined the ways that our government can support women who are working low paying jobs. After school programs were started in Athens in the 90s which helped provide care for children whose parents were working. These children would be running the streets and getting into all kinds of trouble. In an after school program they were given help with homework and given enrichment choices to expand their horizons. It also called for a support system which was also developed in the Clinton administration called EVENSTART which gave parenting training, very early child support as early as the birth of children of poor people. It followed these children in their most important years. The Bush administration has cut the funding of EVENSTART in our school district. Prekindergarten classes were started in many places to give children a heads-up start before kindergarten. It also called for better school food programs and summer programs to help these kids when they weren’t in school. In my last 15 years of teaching I rarely saw a parent who wasn’t working one or 2 jobs to support her family. These programs made a difference. We have to elect Hillary to take back the education system in our country and get Federal funding to support programs that are research-based which will get these families the hands up they need. Hillary hasn’t just given words, she has followed them up with action all of her adult life. If anyone who reads this letter from an interested Georgia citizen, who has a town or county like Athens, then you need Hillary Clinton as your President, who knows how to solve the problems of poverty in our country. It starts with education of our youngest citizens, and is the skeleton that will support everything else that our government can do make our country the leader in the world in giving everyone who desires a chance to succeed that foundation of a good education.

Where are the papers documenting Obama's years in the IL legislature? He has not produced them. But you can look at his consistent support of the anti-American hate-filled Wright to know that he has spent the last 20 years supporting anti-American, hate-filled views. How has Obama voted in the past. He didn't show up for 80% of them and for the 20% he, on occassion, hit the wrong button. This man is not fit for any government office.

It's very tiresome for some to hold up the same old stories about alleged Hillary Clinton "falsehoods" that have been clearly debunked, explained or investigated without penalty years ago. It appears that some just cannot stomach the fact that Hillary Clinton is an intelligent and accomplished woman who is trying to do positive things for our country, and that she has made some money throughout her career . . . . all done legally. For example, the money she made in the futures market was investigated roundly and found to be completely legal. Could it just be jealousy that drives people or perhaps just mere political gamesmanship? If Ken Star and $60 million in wasted taxpayer money for teams of attorneys couldn't even come up with a bad check, why is it that you seem to know more or know better?!

With regard to her trip to Bosnia, you might check out the April 1 New York Times op-ed page that has a report from two people verifying Clinton's account of that trip. But, I suppose because they have some relationship to Hillary Clinton that in your mind they must automatically be liars, right?! Just because no snipers actually shot at the Clintons or others (thank goodness), doesn't mean that the threat didn't exist or wasn't real, as has been verified by numerous others.

I suggest you get your facts straight before maligning someone's character as you did in your writings about Hillary Clinton because your irrational Clinton paranoia is truly frightening. In the end, the truth always wins out as it has with Clinton. Her life and her success have proved you many naysayers wrong time and again and I predict she will do the same again.

I think Hillary is as honest as one can be in politics, and certainly no less honest than Barack. She keeps trying to keep the focus on solutions which the media finds "boring". They find her statement "whatever happens, we will both be fine" without attributing to John Edwards (really, I thought that lots of people have said that) an equal crime to Barack lifting/plagiarizing 30 minutes of a speech. Hillary's legislative record is far stronger than that of Barack's. She has far greater experience and she is smarter. But she is a strong and determined woman, which I appreciate but others seems to hate - double standard. The bias and vitriol leveled against her for being a woman has saddened me. If anyone thought we were in a time where people are judged are their merits - think again! This has made me even more determined to do everything in my power to see her elected. I believe the media bias has been so strong that they went overboard - and the people are starting to look at things objectively and seeing that HIllary is the stronger candidate. Let us hope the democratic process is allowed to proceed - with ALL votes - and the victor will be Hillary.

This 'article' is a sham. As a fair minded male reader, please allow me to debunk it a bit...

Nanci Pelosi is attacked for running the place with an iron fist. I haven't heard that as anything other than a compliment when addressed to any of her male predecesors, but somehow because she is a woman, it is offerred as an insult. I find that insulting as a reader and I'm a man.

Nanci Pelosi's record is completely misprepresented. She promised to improve ethics and has - what major scandals have occurred under her watch? None compared to the Republican years. As for Congressman Johnson - the author is flat out lieing. The exact opposite is true. Pelosi famously and publicly stripped Johnson of his leadership positions immediately when the evidence of his embezzlement came to light. She didn't circle the wagons to protect one of her own party. She stood up and did exactly the right thing. In fact, she was attacked by many as moving too quickly, before he was convicted of any crime because his guilt, or impropriety, was obvious. Pelosi courageously refused to have the good name of the United States Congress tarnished by the cloud of coverup and stonewalling so often employed by the Republicans to protect their worst offenders in scandals ranging from page abuse to flagrant influence trading. The contrast could not be any more clear. Nanci Pelosi has shown true ethical leadership such as we have not seen in the speaker of the house since Tip O'Neil.

Nanci Pelosi did promise to reduce earmarks - but the author is again completely disengenous. The fact of the matter is that in the first year under Democratic leadership, Congress reduced earmarks by 40 - 50%! In the first year! That is a massive correction to the flagrant abuses of the supposedly fiscally conservative Republican years. If the author wants to argue: "Bravo, but there is still more to be done", I would whole heartedly agree. But to pretend that she has failed to live up to her promise is pattently and verifiably false.

Readers should take careful note of the style of smear the author is using... "One cannot do justice in a single column to the repeated misrepresentations that have marked Mrs. Clinton’s career." The author mearly states the accusation, that she is a liar, then fails completely to present any evidence of her having a career of lying.

He cites one author as saying she lies, but presents no evidence of a history of lying. It's a circular argument designed to re-enforce the notion that she is a liar by simply restating that again and again with no evidence to support it. Eventually, as the public hears this tripe over and over again, they start to believe it without ever having heard any evidence.

The SINGLE example he gives is the fact that she may have embelleshed the color commentary about how quickly they moved from the plane to the cars in Bosnia. That's a major lie??? What politician hasn't embelished the color commentary when giving speaches? What does how fast they moved from the plane to the cars have to do with her foreign policy experience? It doesn't. It was an interesting anecdote to make a 45 min speach more interesting. Besides, according to the author her quote was “We were basically told to run to our cars,” - that isn't a lie. She did not say 'we ran to our cars amongst a hail of bullets'. She didn't say 'we were being shot at'. She didn't say anything of the sort. Nothing in what she said was a lie. At the very worst it was a slightly imprecise embellishment of an interesting story. Reagan did that all the time. Obama does that all the time. There is nothing morally wrong about that at all.

In contrast, Obama has lied repeatedly about his policies, his experience, his beliefs as documented by other commentators, but that is ignored while Hillary's very human simple mistake about how fast they moved from the plane to the cars on one of hundreds of trips is distorted out of all context and proportions to pretend that she has a history of lying wich she does not.

The link the author provides to argue that Clinton is no lady is full of made up quotes with absolutely no attribution. None of them are attributed to anyone! He cites her as being abusive to her husband for slapping him after he admitted to having an afair with Monica Lewinski. Now I'm as politically correct as the next person, I don't believe in spousal abuse, I have had a sister who was abused by her husband so I take this charge very seriously, but can ANYONE serously complain that Hillary Clinton slapped her husband after it was found out that he had been having an afair and had been lieing to her about it, publicly? Is the author serious? Of course she slapped him. What woman wouldn't have? She should be appluaded for that not condemned as being a b.... or an abuser.

As for her wicked sense of humor - again, the author employs his favorite tool of simply stating a slanderous charge then providing no evidence. Well, he pretends to present evidence - the snow white joke - but how is that 'wicked humor'? It isn't. At all. Not even a little bit. It was kind of funny, but in no way insulting to men. (And I'm one of them).

This article is completely false garbage, the very worst pretense at journalism and it does us all a great diservice, though I guess I'm glad to have read it to know just how much hatred of women in power some men seem to harbor. Frightening stuff.

This article reads like a smear campaign on Sen Clinton. The journalist would be far better employed in telling us what we don't know about Sen Obama than rehashing issues that were exhaustively investigated in the 1990s. When it comes to Sen Obama, I can do Google searches and find plenty of very disturbing items that the media has completely ignored.

Politicians are not perfect and may be more prone to embellishment than the average person, but I wholeheartedly believe that Hillary Clinton is by far the most qualified candidate running in this election. And what is missed about the Bosnia affair is that she DID travel to a war zone, something Sen Obama hasn't done.

When it comes to honesty, it is Sen Obama, not Sen Clinton, who is constantly changing stories when the truth catches up. Right off the top of my head we have Rezko, Canada/NAFTA, hearing the comments at the church, the questionaire the "aide" filled out, I was a law professor, and on and on. Why don't you write an article about that and stop trying to trash Hillary Clinton?

Hillary Clinton is held to a higher standard for every word she utters or has ever uttered when compared to the other candidates. During the campaign Obama first said he did not hear any fiery rhetoric when he attended church -- and shortly thereafter admitted he did. The ad he is running in Pennsylvania says he does not take money from oil companies -- the truth is that he takes money from oil company executives and PACs. Senator McCain has a shady record from early dealings in Arizona -- those are not talked about.

The words that are used many times by the press paint a distorted picture of the candidates: Hillary plots, Obama plans; Hillary attacks, Obama criticizes; Hillary has "selfish ambitions", Obama has "dedication". Many times these "opinion" words are used in a news story headline -- not on the editorial page.

Hillary was emotional and shed a few tears early in the campaign -- somehow this is a big story. Go back and review the interview with Obama after the rally with the Kennedy's -- he choked up about it -- we don't hear about that.

I was a registered Independent during most of the debates. It became clear to me during the last few debates that Hillary Clinton would be the best President. I changed my party affiliation to Democrat and was a passive supporter of Hillary. The more unfair the coverage gets, the stronger I become in my support for Hillary.

There are many insightful remarks here. I am proud to see the wisdom in the responses from the Clinton-supporters who must definitely feel like the bully is working overtime to kick them off the playground, even though their team is still legitimately in and to some, winning, the race. In all the nasty and negative campaigning, Clinton is the only one that has not resorted in kind. She has kept her dignity, class, and been the only one not to sling the mud, or stab the back. The more I see the way the Obama campaign gets to play the dirtiest of politics, under the guise of ... guess what... "no dirty politics," the more I know that he is not a viable candidate for my vote. His divisive scarcity tactics only harm us all.

After millions of tax payer dollars wasted by the republicans and ken Starr on Watergate they found no wrongdoing on Mrs. Clintons part. Are we going to start this witch hunt again? Have we not learned from our past mistakes? As far as the Bosnia incident, Their is a report by her staff on the trip, the press is not bothering to report, about the dangerousness of this trip. There were reports of sniperfire in the surrounding areas and they did have to make a corkscrew landing, and cut short the greeting ceremony.
I think we know everything we need to know about Hillary Clinton, the question is what do we know about Obama? We know his parents did not meed in Selma as he indicated. His father was not brought over here by the Kennedy's as he claims, dispelling the promoted "camelot connection". We know two of his closest associates were Rezko, a criminal, and Wright Wright. Regardless of Wrights anti american message, Obama attended a church for 20 years that practised Black liberation theology, a seperatist philosophy, while Obama is telling people he can bring people together. He claims he passed a nuclear bill about mandatory reporting of leaks which is not true. The bill was so watered down, it only suggested VOLUNTARY reporting and the nuclear co. is one of Obamas larger contributors. What does that say. He has changed his positions constantly like a typical politician regarding gun control and abortion, and lied about a questionaire about them. He signed a pledge about finance reform and now he doesn't want to honor it.
The bottom line is Yes Hillary Clinton is human and has faults, like everyone, but we know she cares deeply about this country and will fight to make a better world for the middle class and their children. We don't know what we are getting with Obama. I do believe a woman can bring a new perspective, perhaps following her heart and not her ego. I thing we are ready for that change.
