The recent airing of the first episode of HBO’s ‘Generation Kill’ has generated numerous inquiries regarding Marine Corps support of the series. The Marine Corps did not provide any official support to the filmmakers. The series is based on the book by the same title by Evan Wright, a former Rolling Stone magazine reporter who was embedded with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While there are certainly aspects of the film that are accurate, it is at its heart a commercial production. It’s raw and has elements that are very much out of synch with the core values our nation rightly expects of its Marines. Viewed as a whole, in my estimation, it does not accurately portray the honor and professionalism of our Corps of Marines.

Major Romley....Sir you would expect me to beleive that this production is not an accurate depiction of infantry US Marines. I spent 4 years as an 0341 in the 7th Marine regiment and can tell you first hand that it was like watching a video of my time in the corps. Including the lack of effective leadership and the many many references to pop culture. There is also the fact of the all around "retard factor" that seems to be a prevailing force amongst Marine powers that be. I did not take part in OIF I however I spent time in theater and can say that not only was this a true represntation of the behavior of junior Marines but it was spot on when it came to showing the lack of confidence said junior Marines have in their sometimes idiotic leadership. I suggest you remove yourself from your rear echelon assignment and take your poag ass out to a forward operating Line platoon. Once you are there you can see what the REAL Marines think of how they are depicted on screen. I'm sure you will see that they might not see eye to eye with most of their leadership. It would be nice to see what the rank and file jarhead thought of this mini series and not the ones assigned to the public affairs command who only read waht they are ordered to.....Semper I F&%( the other guy.
